Oceans 5 is a consortium of international funders that awards grants to help stop overfishing, establish marine protected areas, and constrain offshore oil and gas development. Arcadia contributes to the Oceans 5 collaborative fund.
Oceans 5 makes strategic grants that provide lasting benefits to coastal communities and the world’s oceans. It funds projects that work to maximize the size and effectiveness of protected areas, improve fisheries management to combat overfishing, and end offshore oil and gas. Oceans 5 supports projects that engage multiple organizations to work toward common objectives.
Oceans 5 does not accept funding proposals, but it welcomes comments on its projects and approach and ideas for potential projects. You can contact Oceans 5 via its website.

Marine protected areas in New Ireland, Papua New Guinea
In 2023, Papua New Guinea announced two new nearshore marine protected areas in New Ireland Province, spanning across more than 16,000 km2. Oceans 5’s grant helped the Wildlife Conservation Society work with Indigenous Peoples, government, and local nonprofits to design and create the new ocean protections. The process took almost seven years and involved more than 9,000 local people from over 100 communities. The two new protected areas more than tripled ocean protections across Papua New Guinea and are a model of community and government partnership towards the global ‘30x30’ target.
The Oceans 5 Partnership programme is one of our five nature grant programmes. Grant programmes are hosted by trusted partners. Our partners help us to determine where our support is most needed and distribute grants to individuals and organizations.
